Huahine Ecotourism

Huahine, a little-known island about a 30 minute plane ride from Tahiti, surrounded by azure blue waters and luscious green forests, is one of the best-kept secrets of the Polynesian islands.

Although the island itself is known as Huahine, it's actually made of two islands: Huahine-nui and Huahine-Iti. (Translated, it means little Huahine and Big Huahine.)

Huahine is known for many things, but what many travelers like the most is that it's their hidden relaxation spot. Huahine is much less traveled than Bora Bora and Tahiti, and is so completely relaxing and relieving that many tourists prefer the little island over the more famous islands.

The Secret Island of Huahine.

Huahine offers adventures that other islands don't offer. For example, Huahine offers flightseeing and helicopter tours. You can also rent private boats for excursions into the lagoon, or go on cruises while you watch the sunset.

And of course, the island has the full array of water sports, including scuba diving, snorkeling, jetskiing, and even kite and windsurfing.

Huahine also features a scenic, 20 mile drive around the island. You'll find beautiful green emerald forests, amazing vistas, as well as small villages on the drive around this coastal island.

The island also features gourmet foods for the most extravagant tourists, as well as simple, delicious, locally grown bananas and melons.

Huahine is a fascinating island to experience. Get away from the hectic tourism or Bora Bora and Tahiti, and come to the relaxing island of Huahine for a holiday experience that will last you a lifetime.

HUAHINE ECOTOURS

Huahine is an Island that has a relatively large population of native Polynesian's; standing at around 5500 people. The people here live a laid back life surrounded by an idyllic tropical paradise. Tourism has not yet overtaken Huahine as there are only a few small resorts and villages. The reason tourism has not exploded on Huahine is because of the lack of beaches. Despite this, Huahine is an excellent destination if you are after a quiet secluded vacation rather than one full of the usual tourist haunts like big resorts and other fan fare. Nature lovers will revel in unspoilt Huahine.

Surfing is a reason why many people visit Huahine as at certain times of the year it provides some amazing waves. Baie d'Avea, Fiiti and Fare are considered the top spots for surfing. Scuba diving will have you viewing several species of sharks, rays, turtles & coral as well as an abundance of marine life with colorful fish and other creatures you'd expect to find inhabiting a coral reef.

Diving at Fare and Parea is another excellent activity as are sail boat charters from the small village of Fare. If you enjoy horse riding then consider visiting La Petite Ferme. This group has riding excursions to cater for all experience levels ranging from two hour rides up to six day adventures.

There are also 4WD tours which allow you to see some very remote and hidden spots like Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti that are normally inaccessible besides with a local guide. For something a little more relaxing try a boat picnic tour. Here you can go on a motorized canoe and enjoy a picnic lunch on a motu, a visit to a black pearl farm plus the opportunity to swim and snorkel in the waters.

To get a taste of the local culture you can take a 2.5 hour Cultural Tour of Huahine. On the tour you will learn a lot about Polynesian Society and visit archeological villages like Maeva.

For a window view take the Circle Island Bus Tour which is a half day tour taking in Huahine Nui & Huahine Iti. You will pay a visit to a vanilla plantation, see the feeding of the sacred eels, Faaie village, the Maeva archeological village and more attractions. This is a great way to fit many destinations into the one tour and is particularly good if you are only spending a short time in Huahine.

Huahine will give you a different taste of Tahiti and is highly recommended if you wish to travel off the beaten track.
