Tikehau Ecotourism

Tikehau (meaning peace, "to be at peace,") is an atoll in a true sense of the word. The island was formed when the underwater coral rose above the ocean, then was slowly eroded by Mother Nature, leaving the atoll the way we know it now.

The island of Tikehau is littered with coconut palms, beautiful sands, crystal clean water, and gorgeous sands and beaches. The lagoon in the center of the atoll measures approximately 27 km in length, and 19 km in width. The entire coral reel is nearly continuous.

Tikehau is located about 300 km northwest of Tahiti, 35 km from Matavia, and 12 km from Rangiroa. The largest village in Tikehau is the village of Tuherahera, a small town full of flowers. There are two other villages nearby, Tuheiava, the "marine village," which houses many fishermen who fish off the lagoon, also sells fresh fish for travelers. Maiaia is the other nearby village, which produces coprah.

The rich fauna of the island draws schools of beautiful fish, sharks, and manta rays to the island's waters. Tikehau is a popular diving spot because of the various beautiful sea-lives in the nearby seabed.

Tikehau also draws tourists because of their incredible beaches. If you enjoy mile after mile of soft pink sand to sink your feet into, or sparkling clean turquoise water to enjoy a swim in, you will absolutely love Tikehau.

Although Tikehau is a small island (only 600-some inhabitants,) it's refreshing and clean beaches, and its amazing aqua-life draws tourists from all over the world. Why not explore this beautiful island on your next vacation?

TIKEHAU ECOTOURS

If you have ever seen those postcards with pristine looking beaches that look to perfect to be true, you'd be forgiven for thinking they don't exist. That is until you find Tikehau.

Tikehau is the picture perfect image that you get when you think of a tropical paradise. Clear blue water, pristine white sand, palm trees and few human inhabitants. Tikehau truly is paradise on Earth.

Life for the traveler on Tikehau is not difficult. Waking up to spectacular sunrises and spending your day on a quiet beach with amazing surrounds is just about everyone's idea of the perfect vacation. But what if you want to do something a little different? Thankfully Tikehau holds other wonders for those who seek them.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

Being an atoll (a coral island) Tikehau not surprisingly offers some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities in the world. Here you will see protected coral reefs and sea life that is so colorful and unique that you will feel as if you are in another world.

There is a scuba diving club on Tikehau and you can go on diving adventures with them at any time of year. In addition to the spectacular life in the waters, there are also ship wrecks to explore on the ocean floor and of course the mysterious caves for those who want a bit of adventure.

The famous diver Jacques Cousteau listed Tikehau as one of his favorite diving spots. He said he had seen more fish here than anywhere else in the South Pacific. If you want to view manta rays then the best time to dive is from July to December. If you are a first time diver then you could take an introductory diving course.

Canoeing

It is always lovely to canoe on calm waters so it is little surprise that canoeing is such a popular activity on Tikehau. Most hotels will provide canoes to guests and it is easy to paddle out to a deserted spot in no time. You can literally find a beach with no one on it and have the whole place to yourself! This truly is a romantic getaway.

Tours

You may like to join a group to take advantage of the knowledge of the locals. You could go on a full day Secluded Motu Picnic which includes an amazing lunch and a trip to an untouched motu (a motu is a coral island in the lagoon of an atoll).

Bird lovers will delight in Bird Island which is a haven for many paradise birds. Half day tours are available to Bird Island, see your hotel for details.

If you have always dreamed of traveling to a deserted island then Tikehau is the place you have been searching for.
